Communities at the Heart of Canada and the World!

I started this project, wanting to hook the Canadian Flag. My way to express that my heart was with Canada, as it had… always been!

I had just finished my Valentine’s Day hooking projects. I started to hook the Maple Leaf using heart shapes and wool strips. I soon realized it would be hard to find a true white with natural wool to make the Flag. The problem became the opportunity and that’s when I thought of making it round instead. The rectangle turned into a circle and the Flag would become the Earth with the land & sea intertwined. I don’t quite remember how the people came about. 32 people, 32 colours, all different, but United! I thought it could represent Community through out Canada and the World.

The one thing I know for sure is that we got to experience the true meaning of Community, after moving to Nova Scotia. Being and taking part of different Communities made our Big Move easy, seamless and simply amazing!

We have been welcomed in the small and wonderful rural seaside Community of Broad Cove. I got to make friends (people & dogs) among my Beach Communities and through Artists & Makers in many shows, markets, shops and creative workshops. Then came along my Rug Hooking Community that litterally changed everything! A group of women, with different lives, backgrounds and stories, coming together to hook! Supportive, caring, hooked on living their passions.

If you search… a Community is “a group of people with diverse characteristics who are linked by social ties, share common perspectives, and engage in joint action in geographical locations or settings.”

In these troubled times, Communities will keep us Together.
