Joi T Arcand – Don’t give up – 2023 – Galeries Roger Bellemare et Christian Lambert

Neon Sign

ekawiya pakici is a command meaning don’t give up. It is an alternative to the commonly used phrase “ähkameyimo” which means “keep going, persevere.” This piece explores the vulnerabilities of mental health and the ways that messages of toxic positivity can sometimes cause more harm. This edition ofmulti-coloured signs mimics the cheerful facade of toxic positivity which reiects difficult emotions in favor of a positive mindset.
